To Modernize Education, Punjab Offers Six Fresh Matriculation Tracks

Moving beyond the customary Science and Arts options, the Punjab School Education Department has introduced six fresh subject streams for matriculation pupils — a major development in educational reform. Starting from the 2025 school year, Grade 9 students will now have several choices:

  • Natural Sciences
  • Computations (An area of Computing Science)
  • Medical Studies
  • Farming
  • Fashion Designing
  • Arts

Each stream includes five essential subjects: English, Urdu, Islamiat, Pakistan Studies, and Quran Translation. In addition to these, students will study specialized subjects according to their chosen stream. For example, the Fashion Designing stream includes Mathematics, General Science, Computer Science, Communication Skills, Fashion Designing, and an Internship.

This initiative aims to align Pakistan’s secondary education with global standards by introducing more pragmatic and career-oriented instruction. Courses like Fashion Designing are tailored to meet the demands of modern industries and promote socioeconomic development by producing skilled professionals.

To ensure effective delivery of the new curriculum, current teaching staff will undergo special training. Despite the changes, the total marks for matric exams will remain 1,100, and students must choose their stream at the start of Grade 9 to receive focused education in their selected field.

This progressive approach is designed to better prepare students for real-world jobs and challenges, offering a broader and more relevant classroom experience.
