For contravention of the Indian Premier League (IPL) Code of Conduct, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) bowler Digvesh Singh Rathi has been fined 25% of his match fee and given one demerit point.
His “notebook” celebration during the April 1, 2025, match vs Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow prompted this action.
When Digvesh struck PBKS’ young batter Priyansh Arya on the fifth ball of the third over, the incident occurred.
The ball hit the top edge and was mid-on taken by Shardul Thakur; Arya tried a pull shot.
After the sacking, Digvesh executed the ‘notebook’ party, which much resembled the trademark style of West Indies bowler Kesrick Williams.
Classifying it as a Level 1 offense, the BCCI discovered Digvesh guilty under Article 2.5 of the IPL Code of Conduct after the match.
He admitted the match referee’s penalty and his mistake. Level 1 infractions have a referee’s ruling that is last and binding.
Regarding the celebration, former cricketer Sunil Gavaskar said, “If a four or six had hit the last ball, such a reaction could have been appropriate.
But gestures like this suggest that you weren’t expecting the wicket; now that you have it, you are just displaying off.”
This episode has opened up a great deal of debate on player behavior and sportsmanship.
Digvesh will have learnt to be more careful of their conduct on the field in the future, along with other athletes.
